Cooley High (12" Single), by Rodney O and Joe Cooley, is a West Coast hip-hop release showcasing the duo's signature bass-heavy sound and intricate turntable scratching by DJ Joe Cooley. The title track, Cooley High, stands out as a fan-favorite for its energetic party vibe, boasting rhymes from Rodney O that celebrate their skills while incorporating crowd participation elements like call-and-response chants. A unique aspect is its extensive sampling from classic funk and hip-hop records, including elements from Going Back to Cali by LL Cool J and Double Dutch Bus by Frankie Smith, blending old-school influences with emerging West Coast styles. This single served as a precursor to their debut album Me And Joe, highlighting their role in pioneering heavy 808 basslines that would influence later G-funk and Miami bass scenes. Alongside tracks like the B-side Let's Have Some Fun, it remains a beloved underground classic among fans of golden-age rap.
